What are the Main Damage Causes and Failure of Optical Transceiver Modules

February 25,2022

As one of the indispensable accessories for optical network communication, optical transceiver module is widely used in application scenarios such as data centers, base stations, LAN (local area networks), backbone networks. Optical transceivers as an accessory product might be damaged during use, including natural damage and man-made damage.

The factors of natural damage are very simple, generally the optical module has reached its service life, natural aging, components fail or run at poor performance. Therefore, we are mainly talking about man-made damage of optical modules.

Contamination of Optical Module Interfaces

Optical module is often used as the last link in the network construction. Sometimes it is left unused after purchase with dust plug removed for a long time, which inevitably lead to the interface contamination of optical transceivers. The use of contaminated fiber patch cables will also contaminate the interface of optical transceiver modules. Therefore, the dust plug should not be unplugged before use, and a new uncontaminated jumper should be connected when using it.

Electrostatic Damage

Electrostatic damage is a relatively common phenomenon, and the discharge process of electrostatic electricity can cause serious damage to the optical module. Meanwhile, when the dust adsorbed by electrostatics accumulates to a certain extent, it will change the impedance between the lines, which will not only affect the normal use of the optical module, but also shorten its working life. Wear anti-static wrist strap band or finger stall when using optical transceiver modules.

Excessive Optical Power

Optical module is divided into short distance, medium distance and long distance transmission, each should be used in corresponding working environment. The use of long-haul transmission optical module in short-haul transmission will lead to excessive receiving optical power and burnout of optical module. Therefore, an optical attenuator is needed to reduce receiving optical power to protect the optical module from burnout.

Whether it is an optical module or other network equipment, it can generally adapt to its working environment, as long as the corresponding operating specifications are complied with in the process of operation, it will not cause damage. As a professional and reliable supplier of optical transceiver modules, GLSUN strictly carries out rigorous quality tests and inspections of optical modules before shipment.
